Message body blank when viewing an email message in Outlook

Email messages with the body of the email missing/blank as well as messages that are returned as undeliverable without a header are symptom of a known issue with two commonly used antivirus products:

  • AVG
  • NOD32

The behavior that you will experience is as follows:

  1. A message arrives in the Exchange mailbox with the full message body.  (If the message is then viewed prior to synchronizing with an Outlook client with a mobile device or via Outlook Web App (OWA) the message will appear as normal).
  2. The message is synchronized to Outlook.
  3. The AVG or NOD32 Add-in deletes the message body during scanning.
  4. The updated message (with the body of the email missing) is now synchronized back to the Exchange server and then synchronized with mobile devices as well as OWA.

In order to prevent this behavior, you will need to remove the AVG or NOD32 add-in from Outlook.

Note: This WILL NOT restore message texts that have already been deleted, The add-ins mentioned here both delete message bodies permanently.

To remove an add-in from Outlook 2010/2013

  1. On the File menu, click Options to open up the Outlook Options dialog.
  2. Select Add-Ins from the left sidebar.
  3. In the Manage field, choose COM add-ins and click Go...
  4. From the COM Add-Ins dialog select the add-in that you would like to change and select Remove.

To remove an add-in from Outlook 2007

  1. On the Tools menu, click Trust Center, and then click Add-Ins.
  2. In the Manage field, choose COM add-ins and click Go....
  3. From the COM Add-Ins dialog select the add-in that you would like to change and select Remove.

    Very useful, afther a manula migration from SBS 2003 whith Exchange 2003 to server standard 2012 and exchnage 2013, outlook 2007 on server 2003 terminal server ocours the issue.

    This fix the issue.
